I was never going to be exempt from the water cooler gossip. It was nice to see that nobody had gotten wind of what was happening behind closed doors. Brooke was a work in progress. There was no way that she could know the hunt was making my blood boil.

Now that I knew the truth, there was no way that I could put the genie back in the bottle. She wasn’t complaining about the attention but she did protest a little too much with her body language. It wasn’t over and I had barely begun my campaign to lure her into acts of depravity.

Sitting there in my car looking at Julia’s long blond hair was more than enough to get my undivided attention. I was on my way to pick up Brooke on my way to the courthouse. I raised my hand and smiled with this guilty pleasure of not having something to make it official.

There was never going to be a ring on my finger. Those kinds of trappings could leave me feeling suffocated unable to breathe. The freedom to pursue extracurricular activities was something I was going to take full advantage of.

“Do you have any idea how hard it is to remain faithful to antiquated ideals? Everybody expects me to act a certain way in public. We both know perception is the key in this business. I like to think of myself as the benchmark. I see potential and I want to mold them into my image. You are no different,” I said with reference to giving Julia the benefit of my experience.

She was my driver and learning by watching me in action on how to be a shark.

“Your wealth of knowledge is astounding. I consider myself one of the lucky ones to be able to benefit from your expertise. Those cram sessions have made a world of difference. I’m almost ready to take the bar exam for the third time.” Julia stated with her eyes looking at me through the mirrored sunglasses on her face.

There was nothing sexual between us but it didn’t mean there wasn’t interest from both parties. I thought it was best to keep things platonic until after she took the exam again.

“Are the two of you through flirting with one another?” I had almost forgotten about Randal sitting there quietly in the corner going over last-minute preparations for court.

He was my younger doppelganger something of a playboy with aspirations to sleep with anything with two legs. Randal had become a sponge for those tidbits of information I had allowed him to glean from me. The man was charming with a sense of style rivaling my own. I did my best to rid him of some of his bad habits.

“Life is too short to live by a certain set of rules. Haven’t I taught you anything? You have to take these moments to enjoy the verbal sparring match when it comes to the opposite sex. There is always an underlying meaning behind their words.
